Earth Month

We don’t need to tell you how important it is that we do our part in helping to protect the planet. So we thought instead of giving a long talk about climate change, we’d cut right to the chase. Here are a list of actions you can take this Earth Day to help our favourite little blue planet.

Give back

Obviously us regular folks can do what we can in our own way to help the environment, but there are experts and organisations out there that dedicate their lives to our planet’s health. Donating is a good alternative if you feel you want to help but are overwhelmed by the thought of where to start.
We at ALPAKA are proud to list 1% for the Planet and One Tree Planted as some of the amazing organisations we donate a portion of our proceedings to. 1% for the Planet is an international organization whose members donate at least 1% of their earnings to assist non-profits that protect and, forests rivers etc, and One Tree Planted works tirelessly to support reforestation efforts.
Donating to either of these places, or a charity that supports a specific cause you believe in might be the perfect way to celebrate Earth Day.

Switch Your Energy

This might sound like a pain at first, but it is actually a lot easier these days to switch energy providers, and could also end up being cheaper for you too. Many eco-friendly companies have made the entire switching process much quicker for you, and the benefits could be potentially world-changing. Partially or fully switching to solar energy also is another avenue worth looking into.

Eat Your Veggies

Now, you don’t have to give up your favourite meaty meal entirely, but it is no secret that cutting down on your meat intake is not only better for your health, but for the planet’s health as well, as the meat industry is responsible for its fair share of pollution and emissions. Incorporating a ‘meat-free Monday’ into your dinner roster could also be a fun way to spice up your weekly meals, by trying something new. It also seems as though this is the perfect time to go meat-free, with
hundreds of vegan and vegetarian recipes on the internet, and some pretty convincing plant based meat alternatives on the market too.

Save Water

The average daily indoor water use in the US is around 60 gallons per person, per day. This fact, when you remember that only .007% of the Earth’s water is available to fuel and feed its 6.8 billion inhabitants, is a little shocking. Some ways you can save water choose reusables like cloth towels, shopping second-hand and choosing products made from recycled materials or more environmentally friendly fabrics such as X-Pac, a 100% climate neutral fabric that we use at ALPAKA. Making these small switches may seem like nothing at first, but the water they are able to save
quickly adds up.

Get the Kids Involved

Teaching kids from a young age the importance of being environmentally conscious is not only an
important education for them to have, but could also result in fun family activities. Making a compost bin together for example, and saving up food scraps for the bin could be a fun way to keep kids thinking about the environment on a daily basis. You could even take it one step further and try to regrow some of your food from veggie scraps, and start a little family vegetable garden that you
then make delicious and nutritious plant based meals with. Healthy meals for you and the kids, reduced food waste for the planet. It's a win-win.
