SEOUL SEARCHING: A JOURNEY THROUGH CULTURE AND CARRY

SEOUL SEARCHING: A JOURNEY THROUGH CULTURE AND CARRY

Seoul is a paradox – bustling yet serene, modern yet steeped in tradition. In winter, it’s even more so; the neon glow of shopfronts, the warmth of fresh-baked pastries, and the biting chill of subzero winds create a cityscape that’s alive in every sense.

As an avid traveler, freelance photographer, and writer, I was ready to take in this unique experience through my lens and my pen. With my ALPAKA gear in tow, we set off to navigate the streets, subways, and markets of Korea’s vibrant capital.

500m UP

Standing atop Lotte World Tower, 500 meters above the city, we watched as Seoul unfolded beneath – Han River snaking through urban sprawl, temples nestled between skyscrapers, the golden hour casting a soft glow over everything.

BATTLING THE WINDS OF HONGDAE

By day, Hongdae is a kaleidoscope of color and chaos. The streets of Hongdae buzz with students and shoppers, where every corner offers a new deal.

As the sun dips, the vibe morphs. Hongdae becomes electric. Neon signs blink to life, buskers line the streets with guitars and glittery outfits, and the beat of K-pop pulses through the air like a heartbeat.

Armed with the intention of hunting for off-season winter wear, I braved the icy winds, my Elements Travel Backpack strapped tight. Its organized compartments kept my finds neatly stowed, freeing my hands to rifle through racks of streetwear.

SEOUL STATION: A RARE STILLNESS

Usually a whirlwind of movement, Seoul Station felt almost eerily empty, the lull before Lunar New Year. The unmistakable scent of warm pastries and freshly brewed coffee filled the air. I wrapped my hands around a hot cup, catching a fleeting moment of sun.

My Flight Sling 2L, light and compact, carried my essentials – passport, phone, and a snack – as I savored the warmth against the winter chill.

A BREAKFAST HUNT IN NAMDAEMUN MARKET

Navigating Namdaemun Market before sunrise, we were met with the assertive hospitality of ajummas waving us into their eateries. We hesitated, moved on, and their disapproval followed us.

The market brimmed with energy – hot soups steaming in the cold air, vendors calling out their daily specials. It was a reminder that Seoul thrives in the details: the gestures, the scents, the unspoken interactions.

From sky-high views to hidden alleyways, Seoul was a city of contrasts – just like the gear I carried. Durable yet sleek, functional yet stylish, my ALPAKA bags made navigating the city seamless. And as I zipped through Seoul’s streets, I carried with me not just my essentials, but the memories of a city that never stops moving.
